PDX NEXT TCORE is a $2 billion international airport mega-project. Constructed in multiple phases, upgrades to the existing site will continue through final completion in 2025. Factors guiding the project can be broken down into three major categories: operational efficiencies, seismic resiliency, and visionary design.

Rising regional growth and tourism estimates an increase from the current 17 million to 35 million annual passengers by 2035. Creating a main terminal to accommodate this increase became the design baseline. An open floor plan concept creates flexible spaces to support efficient operations as programmatic requirements change over time.

Sited within the Cascadia Subduction Zone, PDX is the designated regional staging center for disaster relief efforts after an earthquake. In response, the terminal is designed to remain resilient and operational up to a 9.0 seismic event.

Since 2013, PDX has been consecutively voted as America’s Best Airport. A cherished intimate design, friendly staff, and local amenities are often sited as main factors. As such, a visionary design, which both enhances these qualities and represents the spirit of the Pacific Northwest, became a leading design principle.
